Tracking the Green Spirit? What does that mean?
For me the “Green Spirit”, encapsulated in the ancient image of the Green Man, is the symbol of mankind’s interconnectedness with, and dependence upon Nature for its existence. I seek it out because I believe that every scrap of knowledge we need to live well in this world is here for all of us to access.
This is not a secret. This is not the “occult”, or knowledge given only to an initiated few. Nature’s laws, rhythms and patterns are familiar to each and every one of us as the fundamental facts of our lives. We can apply them to better understand the world, and we’re going to need a clear insight into this foundation once we realize the urgency of cooperating with the way the world works.
Like most of us I was brought up to believe otherwise. Religion gripped me long before I was capable of understanding exactly what it was I was being told. By the time I began to question its teachings I was so deeply indoctrinated that I felt like a heretic just for thinking the “wrong” thoughts. Meanwhile Politics encased my world within an impenetrable structure whose minions had very real power over my every move. And above and beyond all that Science, with its linear, mechanistic and reductionist ideology was supposedly the lighted beacon of truth leading mankind into the bright and shiny future. Nature I learned, had been subjugated by these forces of enlightenment.
Even now many years later, I’m still amazed, almost daily, by the sheer ruthless selectivity of what I was raised to believe. Now I look around and see these sacred institutions exposed for what they truly are. If you’re still with me at this point I don’t think I need to go into detail about the credibility of organized religion, the creaking, archaic political culture that has been far outstripped by the power and influence of the great worldwide corporations, or the scientific establishment, manned by its guardians of “truth” whose mission seems to be to obfuscate and bamboozle while endlessly bickering among themselves.
The Greek philosopher Zeno of Elea told us that “The goal of life is living in agreement with nature”. The bare fact that those civilizations who fundamentally understood and lived by this have been systematically destroyed by those who did not (a process that continues today under our very noses) convinces me that few lessons are ever truly learnt. On the contrary it seems as though we’re absolutely determined to organize our own extinction – and to take every living thing along with us while we’re about it. The Age of Stupid indeed.
This blog is a way for me to clarify my own thoughts and ideas, organize my reading, and bring some kind of order to the flood of information now available. At first glance it may seem to be nothing more than a collection of articles, images, and links brought together at random, but the underlying connections between these subjects are what it’s really about. This is part of my efforts at tracing these connections and in the process furthering my own understanding.
As a secondary motivation, I felt that assembling all these various topics and interests together in one place might conceivably be useful to anyone who’s interested enough to then go and look for themselves.
Along the way it seemed fun to include outlying topics such as music, film (especially documentaries), art and humour. Again I looked for and found connections which made perfect sense. At least they did to me.
So this is my personal log, done by me for me, but done also in the hope of making some small contribution towards turning the tide.
“The most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible.”
